Today, I'm sticking skewers through lead singer Debbie Harry's face.
It's part of my recognition of H.R. Giger, the designer of the above front and rear cover and inner sleeve of her first solo album, 1981's Koo Koo.
Giger, who died Monday at age 74 after a fall in his Zurich home, was best known for his design for the title creature and sets of the 1979 sci-fi film classic Alien, a feat that won him the Best Achievement in Visual Effects Academy Award in 1980.
His work is best known for its dark and twisted qualities, and the New York Daily News reported in its obituary that Giger kept a bedside journal to record his nightmares upon awakening.
His most beautiful and creative work is the iconic album cover for Emerson, Lake & Palmer's 1973 work Brain Salad Surgery. The album featured a gatefold cover (shown below on left) that featured a gray mechanical overlay that opened into the inner sleeve (on right), a portrait of a female face based on the visage of his then-lover Li Tobler.
Giger also created the band's "ELP" logo, shown at bottom left under the circular opening.
