Louis Johnson, member of R&B duo Brothers Johnson and session bassist, died Thursday at 60. The band was best known for the songs "I'll Be Good To You," "Strawberry Letter 23," and "Stomp!," while Louis' backup work included playing on hits for Michael Jackson, George Benson and Michael McDonald. Here he is in action, in footage taken from a 1980 Brothers Johnson concert:

At least I won't choose "My Generation" like all the smug media asses probably will to commemorate this day. I'm going with The Who's "Join Together," which he wrote. We need a lot more of this song's spirit in the world today. I can say this because I live near Waco. There's a million ways to laugh, and everyone's a path I want you to join together with the band. We don't know where we're going, but the season's right for knowing I want you to join together with the band. Listen here:

While I can't find that clip, I'll give you this one instead from an unknown source (one commenter estimates it's from Shindig!) complete with background cheerleaders and Mike Love's really strange shuffling/running in place/bad James Brown imitation. (By the way, the promotion worked - the song hit #1 two weeks later.)
