So here's what Christmas looked like 40 years ago, when I was 9 months old: John Denver and a then-little-known Steve Martin were pluckin' it up on TV... George Harrison had a pirate obsession... and my soon-to-be-favorite TV show had just released an album with this track, wherein Bert finally gets some female lovin'. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!
So, that last entry about "Dance to the Music" got me thinking: How many songs are there like that where the group's members are mentioned within the song? And I actually came up with 5 (and one kinda sorta). Two caveats: Live versions are discredited because it's common in those for the lead singer to give a shout-out to another musician before their solo, and there's too many rap songs where the group's members introduce themselves so I disqualified all of them. Here goes (in alphabetical order): 1. "Ballroom Blitz" by Sweet - It's in the intro.
2. "Bootylicious" by Destiny's Child - Again, the intro. 3. "Creeque Alley" by The Mamas and The Papas - The whole song's about them. 4. "Sleigh Ride" by TLC - Merry Christmas! The intro! 5. "Surrender" by Cheap Trick - Finally, the most difficult one. Listen hard to hear guitarist Rick Nielsen chant out that all the group members are "all right" individually at the close of the song - it starts around 3:50 and the easiest to discern is "Rick's all right." Honorable mention: "Early 1970" by Ringo Starr. This was the flip side to his 1971 hit single "It Don't Come Easy" and was written about his old band The Beatles after their 1970 breakup. Each band member gets a verse, but none is mentioned by name, so I'll let you have fun with the cryptic clues to figure out who's who. |
